As an extremely energetic child, Tom’s mother encouraged him to regularly participate in a wide variety of sports.
Never quite excelling in one particular field, it wasn’t until the age of 17 when, encouraged by the high achievers at his local judo club, he decided he too wanted to get a black belt.
After four hard months of training he achieved his goal. Tom went on to be selected to represent Great Britain. Moving his training up a gear, Tom improved greatly and changed from -100kg category to -81kg.
At this new weight, Tom went from strength to strength, winning the Commonwealth Judo Championships and the British Championships in 2005. Tom was in contention for both the 2008 and 2012 Olympics but unfortunately did not quite get there and was named reserve.
Tom interacted really well with the young people attending the School Games competition. The young people enjoyed hearing about how Tom got to where he is now and the difference sport can play in people’s lives.
