John Sullivan is a former Royal Marines Commando, adventurer and expedition leader who inspires young people to build resilience, develop confidence and believe in what they are capable of achieving.
Leaving home at just sixteen to pursue a career in the Royal Marines, John earned the coveted Green Beret through determination, discipline and an unbreakable mindset. Through his experiences, he learned that resilience is not something people are born with — it is built through challenge, perseverance and the moments when giving up feels easiest.
Today, John brings those lessons into schools through powerful and engaging presentations that combine real-life adventure stories with practical tools for personal growth. Using immersive visuals, humour and inspiring storytelling, he encourages students to step outside their comfort zones, face setbacks positively and develop the confidence to achieve their goals.
Alongside his work as a speaker, John has travelled to some of the world’s most remote and demanding environments, supporting factual programmes for the BBC and National Geographic Channel and leading conservation expeditions for young people in Namibia, Belize and Borneo. His experiences exploring jungles, deserts and isolated communities give students fascinating insights into teamwork, leadership, survival and the importance of resilience.
John’s presentations focus on two key themes: resilience and leadership. Students learn how mental strength is developed, why discomfort can lead to growth, how to respond positively to setbacks and the value of persistence. He also challenges young people to understand that leadership is not about rank or status, but about attitude, responsibility and leading by example.
John Sullivan’s school presentations focus on one powerful message: Resilience can be learned. Leadership can be developed.

Just wanted to say a big thank you to John Sullivan who came to our school to deliver a speech at our awards evening for Year 9. He did a fantastic job, his speech was an excellent balance of motivation humour and inspiration. He kept us all gripped for 20mins. Many of out 300 guests have spoken to or contacted me since to say that he was the best speaker we have had in many years.
John Sullivan and his experiences were both entertaining and extremely interesting. Highy recommended; something you are likely not to see or hear again.
