Ayaz Bhuta MBE is a Wheelchair Rugby Paralympic Gold Medallist. Ayaz was born with Robert’s Syndrome, a rare genetic disorder which affects both his upper and lower body limbs.
Ayaz Bhuta MBE childhood years were plagued by hospital visits and major operations which affected his early education but despite this setback he was able to graduate from university in 2010.
Throughout his life Ayaz has had to break down his own barriers, with the biggest one being told that he would not be able to compete internationally for Great Britain due to his stature. Despite this setback Ayaz was determined to prove people wrong and worked even harder and returned to the GB team three years later. Since returning to the Great Britain team Ayaz has competed at two Paralympic games, is a double European Champion and a Paralympic Gold Medallist from Tokyo 2020.
The team made history by becoming the first GB and European team to ever win a medal at the Paralympic games in the sport of wheelchair rugby, it just so happened to be gold! Ayaz was awarded an MBE for services to wheelchair rugby after this magnificent achievement. Ayaz has also received an Honorary Doctorate from his former university for his services to sport and the community.
What does it take to bounce back from disappointment? Our athletes open up about tough moments in their careers, from injuries to defeats, and how resilience helped them keep going. Pupils will learn valuable lessons about never giving up, adapting to change, and staying strong when times get tough.
Our athletes share powerful personal stories about overcoming barriers, embracing differences, and creating an environment where everyone feels valued and included. These talks encourage pupils to celebrate diversity, show kindness, and stand up for others in sport, school, and everyday life.
Even individual athletes rely on the support of a team. This talk highlights the importance of working together, trusting others, and playing your part. Pupils will hear how teamwork creates success in sport and how these skills can make a difference in school, friendships, and everyday situations.
Ayaz delivered a fantastic assembly about wheelchair rugby and the difficulties he has had to overcome. He also did workshops with KS2 to encourage teamwork, communication and resilience. The children and adults loved hearing about his experiences and everyone was inspired by his determination.
Inspirational Athletes connects schools & communities with elite athletes who inspire, motivate and engage young people through talks, workshops and sports sessions.
