Polly Williamson is a multiple gold medal-winning event rider whose life changed in an instant after a near-fatal brain injury.
What followed is a powerful story of resilience, adaptability and rediscovering purpose – one that strongly resonates with young people navigating challenge, change and self-belief.
A natural talent from a young age, Polly was selected for her first European Championships at just 18, winning double gold. She went on to secure a further four European titles, two National Championships and compete internationally across Europe and Australia. Alongside her sporting success, Polly built a thriving equestrian business, training elite riders and producing horses for the global market.
In 2011, Polly’s career – and life – took an unexpected turn when she sustained a traumatic brain injury. Facing the loss of her business, independence and identity, she embarked on a long and demanding road to recovery. From relearning how to walk and talk, to rebuilding her confidence and sense of self, Polly’s journey is one of extraordinary determination.
Today, Polly uses her experiences to inspire students. With honesty, warmth and humour, she shares the lessons she’s learned about resilience, mindset and embracing change. Her story encourages young people to understand that setbacks do not define them – and that strength often comes from the most unexpected places.
A published author of Where Did I Go?: Rediscovering My Identity, Lost After a Traumatic Brain Injury, Polly is passionate about supporting others. She has volunteered with Barnardo’s, works with the Riding for the Disabled Association, and regularly speaks for Headway, championing those affected by brain injuries.
Polly is an engaging and relatable speaker who connects deeply with education audiences. She leaves students feeling empowered, reminding them that resilience is something we can all develop – and that even in the face of life’s toughest challenges, it’s always possible to find a new path forward.
We are stronger than we think; the tools and strategies we can all use to build resilience and strengthen our perseverance. Polly gives insights into navigating adversity and the importance of perseverance and determination alongside the key points used to break down targets and follow success.
Brain injury washed away any identity. Polly explains how she secured her identity and regained former strengths. The positive habits, routines and mindset that led to Polly locking a healthy and positive identity.
Polly’s engaging account of her story told with great conviction, plenty of humour and, at times, disarming honesty, made a very positive impact on our students. She did not hide the difficulties and challenges that she had encountered and continues to encounter but the resilience that Polly has shown, and the obstacles that she has overcome, cannot fail but to inspire those who hear her. She makes all things seem possible with the right mindset and determination and her lack of any self-pity sharpens the listeners’ focus on what is possible rather than what is hard to achieve. I highly recommend Polly as a speaker and imagine her story will resonate and inspire those of any age. That was certainly the case when she came to us!
Polly fully engaged all our students throughout her excellent presentation. Polly highlighted the importance of determination and focus and is very much booked for a return visit.
