How to Get the Most Out of an Athlete Visit: A Teacher’s Guide
Bringing an athlete into school is about more than a one off visit – it is a chance to create lasting impact on your pupils’ confidence, mindset and motivation. With a little preparation, the experience can be even more meaningful and memorable.
Here is how to make the most of your upcoming athlete visit.
1. Share the Excitement Ahead of Time
Let pupils know in advance that an athlete is coming in. Build anticipation by sharing a few key facts about the visitor – who they are, what sport they are known for and some of their achievements. A few teaser videos or social media clips can go a long way.
Bonus idea: Let pupils prepare questions in advance. It gets them thinking and helps the session feel more interactive.
2. Link the Visit to Key Values
Whether it is resilience, teamwork, goal setting or growth mindset, talk to your pupils ahead of the day about how these values connect to sport and success. This helps them listen with purpose and relate what they hear to their own lives.
3. Involve the Whole School
Try to include a wide range of pupils in the event, not just those already engaged in sport. Inspirational Athletes are skilled at tailoring talks to all abilities and interests – from budding sports stars to children who might be lacking confidence.
4. Think Beyond the Talk
If your package includes a practical session, assembly and class visits, consider how you can link the experience across the day. Could pupils write a reflection afterwards? Could they share key takeaways in their next PSHE or PE lesson?
5. Communicate Any Specific Needs
We will always ask in advance, but feel free to let us know about any SEN requirements, sensitive topics to avoid, or anything that would help the athlete better understand your group. These details help us tailor the visit to fit your school perfectly.
6. Follow Up and Celebrate
After the visit, celebrate the moment – share photos, ask pupils to write or draw what inspired them, or include a recap in your newsletter. These small actions help the messages stick.
